One of the drawbacks of digital cameras + social networking sites.
Although, this kinda makes me think of how, back in the 19th century, people took pictures of their dead loved ones (as seen in the movie “The Others”, and in this article: http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/32946).
I actually don’t see this as a fail. Many families like to celebrate the person’s life instead of moaning. Also they’ve probably haven’t seen each other in years.
As long as they are not standing over the coffin with big smiles I see nothing wrong with smiling in pics at funerals.
Yes, who takes a camera to a funeral let alone pose for pictures? Celebrating the deceased’s life has nothing to do with it. That’s what the wake or get together after is for, not the parking lot outside the funeral home.
Now if they were posed over the open casket flashing gang signs and duckface… that would be a fail. or a win. either way i want my funeral to have potato sack races and water balloon tosses. maybe even a giant bouncy air castle!
Potato sack races?? Brian, I think you’re confusing “family reunion” with “church picnic from the 1950s.” To me a family reunion is anytime family gets together that hasn’t seen each other in a year or more.
I recently went to a funeral back home (in a different country) where I have many family members I hadn’t seen in a long time. So when I mean a family reunion I mean the only time people can get together to see one another is if a wedding, funeral, or vacation(if you’re lucky to have that) time come up.
I still see no fail in this. And we don’t know if this pic was taken at the wake or before the funeral.
Cee Cee:
Whether this was taken at the wake or before the funera, doesn’t matter. You don’t take these jolly-good-fun pictures and post them on facebook under the album “rest in peace”. That’s just wrong. If these people were family who seldom meet, at least they can post these pics under a different context, like another album, called “family reunion” or something.
Either way, taking posed pics at the parking lot, while still wearing a dress is disrespectfull.
Funerals are about celebrating the life of others in your life just as much as honoring the memory of the person who died. If you can find a moment or two of joy in the midst of a tragedy you shouldn’t feel bad about it, or sharing pictures of those moments.
The only fail is the person who publicly called their ‘friend’ out in the picture comments.
Bruce:
Yes, smiling at funerals is not wrong, but they must then be brought forth by something. If they were looking at family photos and/or sharing anecdotes about the deceased, it’s ok to take pictures of it. But just standing in the parking lot, randomly going “hey, this is a perfect opportunity to take some smiling pics” is not just really wierd; it’s simply stupid.
@voxlashi Nothing stupid about it. As pointed out already, funerals bring people together that may not have seen each other for quite a while. I don’t see why you have to pass on the opportunity to take photos together because the overall occasion is solemn.
People deal with loss in different ways. I can understand if you wouldn’t want to have photos taken if you were in that situation. But don’t act like they made some horrific social transgression.
Yes, it is okay, but as I pointed out already, such photos should be taken under different circumstances, and not while still wearing a funeral-suit and name the album “rest in peace”. That doesn’t only remove the focus from the funeral, but it actually expresses that casual posing at a very untimely situation is normal. And as far as I’m concerned, taking pictures showing people who seems to be having the time of their lives at the scene of before/after a funeral, is not normal. Ergo they are at the very best ignorant of the situation. And if these people deals with their grief by posing in front of a camera, for then to share it on facebook, on the same album as they probably have the deceased’s family in grief, I’d say that is pretty f***ed up. But that goes without saying.
At least the coffin’s not in the picture. I went to a funeral once where, at the end of the service the family all got up and started POSING like gangstas in front of the casket. WTF? And the best part was that they were using disposable cameras. EPIC FAIL!
The only thing I’d consider a slight faux pas is posting pictures from a funeral on facebook, but even thats understandable as its a way to share photos with family.
Oh, just had the same experience more or less with my Father-in-Law; my silly brothers-in-law thought that the most important thing in the world was to take pictures every twenty seconds — including open casket photos — and put them on a dvd to distribute to the family. I thought it was morbid and stupid. We had all just got together less than three months earlier — the pics were unnecessary and inappropriate, especially when he was wanting to take group photos after the reception (one with, and one without, smiles). Talk about weird. The whole thing felt awkward and strange — too much emotion going on to expect everyone to feel comfortable with having pics taken. Just plain inconsiderate in my view; it’s a personal thing and should be left that way, not an opportunity to force a “Family” obligation to some kind of picture taking or Videos (also done).
who the hell takes a camera to a funeral anyway? its not the fact they are smiling, its the fact that they are such attention whores, they think a FUNERAL is the right time for a photo op.

I’d say that taking a camera in the first place is a fail.
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:29 am
Exactly.
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:51 am
I agree with Cee Cee. It’s a family reunion and as long as they aren’t dancing on the coffin there’s nothing wrong about this.

…or maybe they just really didn’t like the person who died?
December 23rd, 2009 at 6:02 am
You don’t take posed pics (or any pics) at a funeral! That’s just tacky! Enjoy seeing your family all you want but that’s just weird.
