Had this guy one time, tailgating me through a school zone. Speed Limit was 25 w/o flashing light. Am doing 25. This guy gets on my ass. Fed up with him, I slowed down to 10 MPH. He couldnt pass me due to double lines.
Got to where he was to turn off – realized he’s the frickin Fire Chief!! He wasn’t in his MARKED car, so was using his private vehicle. AND he didn’t have his lights flashing… So he wasn’t on an emergency call, or I’d of pulled off.
But seriously? Tailgating is a stupid thing to do…
Otto, a tip from a professional driver, just so you know:
Tailgating is dangerous. The safest thing for drivers in front of you to do is slow down in order to increase the distance to the car in front of *them*, to have more time to prevent an accident in the only way he or she can control. It also encourages you to pass, putting you in a safer position, i.e. in front where we can see you.
FYI, shooting out someone’s tires is also dangerous.
I slow down when I’m being tailgated…on the 101…in the slow lane…when I’m already doing 5 MPH over the speed limit. But I slow down just to encourage the jerk to pass me. When they don’t pass, then I assume they’re either: a) drafting or b) getting a kick out of my personalized license plate…which SHOULD be illegal in the state of CA, BTW.
Either way…I’m too relaxed to care. I just hope that I don’t have to brake real fast.
Well, driving slower in German highways just won’t work. A rear-end crash by a car doing 190mph is no way funny.
Wouldn’t do in Mexico either. If you don’t move, you’ll be rear-ended, then ignored by the reckless asshole overpassing and go home with a scratched back whose repairs no one but you will pay for.
